In 2007, Steven Wilson and Allen Perkins were frustrated with the way that most IT companies did business — overbooking techs, underserving clients, selling unnecessary equipment — and they routinely saw businesses grapple with IT problems that could easily have been solved by thinking outside the box. Steven and Allen believed that they could do better. They quit their jobs, registered the business name and domain name, and set up a mail server in Steven’s spare bedroom. Catalyst Technology Group was born. To round out the leadership team, Rob Rotert became a Partner in 2016. He brings Operations and Service excellence to the team.
Catalyst recognizes that IT is, at its core, a service business. It doesn’t work without people, and furthermore, it doesn’t work unless you earn their trust. To do that, you have to be honest, knowledgeable, and consistent — and that is what we strive for.
We also believe that IT service is often better accomplished by an impartial, external party (like us). Our focus is on keeping your network and systems operating smoothly. Steven Wilson, Managing Partner & Co-Owner
Our Managing Partner and Co-owner Steven Wilson founded Catalyst along with Allen Perkins in a spare bedroom in 2007 after about a decade spent installing structured network cabling and telecommunications systems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology with an emphasis on software development, along with over a dozen different IT certifications, from HIPAA Security to Wireless Security. The Lincoln City native has a soft spot for classic hand tools (his favorite is the number 7 jointer plane) because he believes that the best solutions are sometimes the simplest, most low-tech ones (he’s also into woodworking). His favorite thing about working at Catalyst is the opportunity to work with such excellent people, and outside of work, Steven can be found gardening, surfing, paddleboarding, or homebrewing.
Allen Perkins, Co-Owner
Co-owner and co-founder of Catalyst Technology Group and co-founder of the non-profit organization known as Greenlane Sustainable Business Network. Allen earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Oregon. After earning a post-graduate paralegal certification from the National Academy of Paralegal Studies, Allen spent five years working as a paralegal/investigator at the law firm of Lombard, Brewer, Honsowitz, Gardner and Associates in Eugene. Following his work as a paralegal, he worked as a fraud investigator for 11 years before entering the IT field. Allen moved into IT because he wanted to secure companies’ data rather than investigate its theft after the fact. Allen currently spends his spare time coaching children’s athletics, gardening, and enjoying the beautiful Oregon outdoors.
Robert Rotert, Co-Owner and Lead Engineer
Catalyst Co-owner and Lead Engineer Rob Rotert has been with us since October 2009. He graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in Computer Information Systems, CCNA, and is a Vmware Certified Professional (VCP). Rob is the proud nurturer of a lifelong fascination with computers and all things technology. He wanted to know how all of it worked; how to take it all apart and put it back together again, so he pursued a career in IT. He loves that IT happens at the intersection between humans and technology, and that it allows him to create systems and solutions that work for organizations. Originally from Pocatello, Idaho, Rob is all about balance and enjoys unplugging with long trail runs in the woods when he’s not at work. He’s a fan of anything written by Kurt Vonnegut and loves to imbibe in homemade kombucha.
Li Hoang, Procurement Specialist
Catalyst’s Procurement Specialist, Li Hoang, grew up in Stockton, California and worked for Hynix Semiconductor before joining the Catalyst team in 2011. He is Network+ and Security+ certified. Li’s an introvert who appreciates that IT offers social interactions on an as-needed basis, as well as the flexibility to spend time with his kids, catch a movie, play pool, or play his favorite video game, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6: Siege. He’s frequently seen with a can of La Croix in hand.
Michael Coiner, Help Desk Technician
Michael came aboard as Catalyst’s Help Desk Technician in 2015 after working as a computer repair technician. Michael’s earned associate’s degrees in Computer Network Operations and Computer Information Systems from Lane Community College (LCC), along with CompTIA A+ and Network+ certifications. He loves working in IT because he’s a natural-born problem solver with passions for continuous learning and helping people find solutions to their tech snags. Michael was born and raised in Eugene and spends his free time with friends or playing video games like League of Legends.
Justin Boecker, Network Technician
Justin joined the Catalyst team in 2015 as our Network Technician. A self-styled IT geek from the start, Justin enjoys solving problems — especially those that relate to computers. He has earned an associate’s degree in Network and Systems Administration, a Networking certificate, a Security+ certification, and a CCNA from Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC). Justin is originally from Southern California, but considers Eugene his home. Prior to joining the Catalyst team, he worked at Albany General Hospital. Outside of work, Justin can be found in the kitchen, cooking and sipping Antique Weller 107, or playing tabletop RPGs. His favorite video game is Bioshock and his favorite movie is Dr. Strangelove. Life also just wouldn’t be the same without his Complete Far Side collection.
Devin Morgan, Network Technician
Devin joined Catalyst in 2013 after his previous life as a general contractor. Devin is certified in CCNA Routing & Switching, CCNA Security, and CompTIA Security+. He loves that this new role will allow him to fix things and solve technical problems. In his free time, the native Oregonian enjoys building all sorts of things and reading fantasy novels like The Saga of Seven Suns.
Noah Merwin, Intern
Our intrepid Intern, Noah Merwin, joined the team in January 2018. He hails from Eugene and has absolutely no certifications — yet! He loves working with computers and technology and when he's not on the job, he can be found learning more about both (or playing Halo). His favorite part of working with Catalyst is the daily challenges that he faces and, more specifically, how it feels to overcome those challenges.
